The Johnson County Council of Governments (JCCOG) recently learned of a new Google experiment to build and test ultra-high-speed broadband networks in one or more communities across America:  “Google Fiber for Communities.”  In response, the JCCOG Urbanized Areas have formed the Iowa City Area Broadband Coalition (ICABC).

We live and work in a truly unique and innovative environment.  With one of the largest research universities, medical complexes, and medical teaching facilities in the country, we believe that our dynamic, high-tech community would truly flex the power that this additional infrastructure could provide.  The strong, cooperative partnership shared by the JCCOG Urbanized Areas should make it easy for Google to deploy in our area.  Our collective recovery from the flood of 2008 demonstrated just how well this community works together.

Until March 26th, Google is asking interested municipalities to provide them with information about their communities through a Request for information (RFI), which they will use to determine where to build their network.  The ICABC is excited about the possibilities, but there isn’t much time!

Working together, the ICABC members are putting together an application to send to Google before the deadline.  In the meantime, we need your help!  Please show your support by utilizing one or more of the links to the right.

Like Google, we look forward to seeing what’s possible!
